Lake Malawi is one of the natural wonders of Africa. The freshwater lake is one of the most beautiful locations in entire Africa. It is also humungous in size; it takes up close to a one thirds of Malawi, a land locked country in Africa. The lake is fifty five miles wide, and three hundred and sixty miles long, which earned it the nick name calendar lake. The lake is bordered by Tanzania and Mozambique as well. It is called the Lake Nyassa in these countries.

Lake Malawi has some of the most crystal clear waters among waters in the world. You can swim, dive, snorkel to your hearts content. The lake is filled with Cichlids in vibrant colors, and is famous all over the world for these flowers. The lakeside beaches are just as heavenly, with golden sands and rustic villages filled with charm.

The highlight of the African destination is the fact that accommodation and food is cheaply available here, so you can enjoy a heavenly holiday with no worries of running out on cash. In fact Lake Malawi is one of the most popular backpacker destinations in Africa. The sheer number of activities on offer here makes for a complete experience.

Lake Malawi has a ton of excellent activities, you can swim, snorkel and dive in these crystal clear waters. The view of the unsullied landscape is something else you should relish. The waters are calm and tranquil, just rippling away contently. There are opportunities to go sailing as well. Fishing is another extremely popular activity. You can also water ski in the lake for cheap as well. In fact everything is considerably cheap here. The views of the sunset are heavenly.

The southern shore of Lake Malawi is the most popular area here. There are destinations such as the Namaso Bay, the Mkudzi Bay, Monkey Bay, Cape Maclear, Mangochi area, Senga Bay and others.

The northern shore is less popular and less populated. It is also much colder and a lot less developed. In the summer it is not at all cold, so this is when you should go here. There are some historical towns such as Karonga and Livingstonia that have attractions related to culture. Chintheche Kande Beach, Dwangwa, Chikale Beach (Nkhata Bay) and Nkhotakota are the most perfect places to stay in the northern shore.

Likoma Island is another notable destination that comes under Malawian territory even though it lies in Mozambique waters. The island is home to an array of varied attractions, and these are inclusive of a huge cathedral dating back to the early years of the twentieth century. There are a number of excellent beaches.
