It is the third most populous Portuguese influenced city and is behind the Rio De Janeiro and the Sao Paulo regions which are in Brazil.

How to Reach

Luanda is reached by air and has the airport catering to most of the popular airlines in Africa.

By rail Luanda is reached with a lot of difficulty. Angola which was once the hub of rail network is today short of a lot of rail connection.

Luanda is reached by road through the national highway which is greatly beautiful and has the best six lane highways. There are buses which ply on the national Bus Service lines.

Luanda is reached by boat through the ferry that operates from Luanda to the Cabinda exclave. This takes around 14 hours.

Travel Attractions

As it hovers over all the constructions in the city, this is a monument that is dedicated to the First Angolan President Augustino Neto. He greatly contributed to the Independence struggle of Angola.

Then there is the Fortaleza de Sao Miguel which was constructed in the year 1576, and is the administrative centre in the city. It was a self contained for the military garrison, and is an ideal place for the slaves. There are tiled decorations that depict the city’s history through relics and there are cannons which are shown being used in those times.

Go to the National Museum of Slavery and enjoy the sights of the way the slave life is depicted in those times. The Capa de Casa Grande is where the slaves were baptized before they were sent to America. The museum is a place with a magnificent chapel and the canons here are seen on the outside. The chapel is a beautiful stone structure in the middle and is devoid of any kind of description. Many objects of that period gone by are seen here. So you can find the whip, stocks and shackles here in the museum. There are framed prints on the walls and they are published works with a lot of information with them. There is a flat screen monitor here to detail about the exhibits.

National Museum of Slavery

Also visit the National Museum of Natural History which is another place with the best depiction of Angolan culture and history and has the most impressive display of masks, and sculptures and other tools and jewelry along with the clothing and the musical instruments of those times.

The Fortaleza de Sao Pedro da barraa is another interesting place to visit and is a 17th century construction. The area is the place where the slave trade began, and was used to keep the slaves till they were sent away. The fort has had many nationalists who were arrested and they were taken to the labour camps.

Then there is the Igreja Nossa Senhora do Populo which is the first Anglican Church here in this land of Luandan pleasures. Come here and enjoy this structure of 1482. The lovely Baroque kind of architecture is one that makes this a great attraction for all tourists coming to this part of the world.
